Anti-virus Software Distribution
Faculty & Staff
Windows Computers
With the new Microsoft Campus Agreement, UT is now licensed to offer Forefront Client Security to Faculty and Staff for use on university owned computers.
Forefront is Microsoft's anti-virus and malware protection product that helps guard against threats such as spyware, root kits, viruses, worms, and Trojans. It is supported on:
- Windows XP SP2 or later
- Windows Server 2003 SP1 or later
- Windows Vista SP1 Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate
- Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate
- Windows Server 2008 R2.
OIT has developed two automated tools to help with the installation of Forefront and accomplish the mandatory removal of UT versions of McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise for Windows by the 06-30-2010 deadline.
- A combination tool that will install Forefront and, if necessary, remove McAfee during the same process.
- A stand-alone tool that will remove only UT versions of McAfee.
To obtain these tools, click on this link: Download Forefront Anti-virus Software
- Login using your netid and corresponding password.
- Select, download, and run the tool appropriate for your use.
To protect personally owned computers running Windows operating systems, the University is recommending that Faculty and Staff install Microsoft Security Essentials. Additionally, it is recommended that the stand-alone tool, described above, be used to remove all UT McAfee software from personally owned computers.
OS X Computers
For Faculty and Staff using university owned, or personally owned Macintosh OS X or later computers, the University is recommending ClamXav. This link offers download opportunities for the application and a very good FAQ section covering installation information as well as other bits of interest.
